The Agronomist (Directed by Jonathan Demme, 2003, 90 min.) is a documentary following the life of Haitian radio personality and activist Jean Dominique. The film provides a gritty and inspiring look into Haiti’s struggle for democracy underneath successive repressive and corrupt regimes. Dominique founded Radio Haiti-Inter and used the platform to broadcast the struggles of Haiti’s poor majority. The first station to broadcast entirely in Creole (and not in French) Radio Haiti Inter was a powerful voice for a democratic Haiti. Despite Haiti’s ability to silence critics and activists, Radio Haiti-Inter managed to broadcast for over 3 decades only to close a few years after Dominique’s assassination in 2000. The film illuminates the struggle of Haiti’s poor underclass and the passionate voices of those who fought for the heart of their troubled home country.
The Carrefour Collaborative is a Chicago based non-profit organization that provides grants to artists working in Haiti. As the group plans to return in March, proceeds from the evening will be used to subsidize the costs of hiring a young Haitian film crew to document the work of the sponsored artists in Haiti.
The Carrefour Collaborative seeks to provide the freedom to create. We choose our artists based on merits alone and work from there. We provide what the artists needs most, from basic living expenses to top of the line recording technology. Our only requirement is art — the sponsored artist is fully accountable for providing a finished work at the end of the funding period. We believe that in leveling the playing field for Haitian artists, the global artistic community will benefit just as much as the sponsored artists.
