What does it mean to be an artist? An artist is one who lives a creative life. A creative life is when one creates something where there was nothing before.
What is the function of art? The function of art is to give oneself, or others, deeper insight and meaning into the world around them.
What is more important to you, the process or the result? The result is based on the process. The end result is what is witnessed and should communicate an idea effectively, hopefully the idea for which the artist was aiming.
Do you label yourself as an artist? After many years of labeling myself a “painter”, I finally feel I can label myself an artist. I now recognize that I do create something where there was nothing before. I realize now I have the ability to effectively communicate, through a visual means, an idea that can give deeper insight and meaning into the world around us.
Art@Coles #17 featuring work by Justin Bushman, Andrew Hannigan, and Alan Lerner On Display Through July 8, 2012
ART RECEPTION Monday, June 4, 8-10pm Cole’s 2338 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago
_______________
Justin Bushman | justinbushman@yahoo.com I am a conduit for outer forces that infect me vicariously. This work is the physical representation of the images I see in the dark recesses of my mind.

Andrew Hannigan | me@andrewhannigan.com I work with images of heroes from different periods and in different styles, from Nordic myths to Persian miniatures and Japanese characters from classic and pop culture sources. I am interested in how the various mannerisms and mark making come together from a variety of sources to manifest an idealized yet flawed meta-human. Without any specific narrative, I try to depict a collapsed story that gives form to heroes.

Alan Lerner | albomatic@gmail.com I approach my life and art as a skeptic, questioning conventional wisdoms and trusting in what is a shifting set of beliefs. My work looks at artiface, theater and contradiction as catalysts toward finding truth. The screen printing medium allows me freedom to pursue the packaged and the moment.
Art@Cole’s is an ongoing series on the walls of Cole’s Bar featuring a variety of artists in changing exhibits every 6-8 weeks for the last 2 and half years. Art@Cole’s is an AnySquared Project.
AnySquared’s Studio Day Today! Stop by Wednesday from 3pm to 8pm at AnyWhere Space, 2328 N. Milwaukee Ave. Be determined to make things! Create your Abe for the AB(e)DUCTED! Honest Abe Art Show.
Looking for a collaborative environment or somewhere to work on projects with the kids? Every week at the AnySquared’s Studio Day at their space on Milwaukee Ave, artists and families gather to work on a variety of projects in the unique studio space. Starting two years ago after amassing a collection of various supplies, they started to invite people over to work and it turned into a weekly open studio in which anyone could come. A variety of supplies are available for use, including drawing supplies, collage materials, easels, paint, a sewing machine, etc. The space overlooks Milwaukee Ave and has multiple tables and desks to work at. There is plenty of room for working on screenprinting, drawing, painting, sewing, laptop work, and much more. You can bring your own project and supplies to work on or make something on the spot with what is provided. AnySquared provides a relaxed, yet productive environment where people of all ages can get brainstorming and production done!
AnySquared says: “While many of us are visual artists, all art forms encouraged and welcome! Bring supplies… share supplies… some supplies available and provided… bring a project… bring ideas… brainstorm… Some days are a couple people, some days a crowd.”
