Artists’ Statement
Drawing from our respective practices of textiles and filmmaking, this site-specific installation is a series of large-scale weavings using semi-translucent, synthetic materials of medical tubing and celluloid film.
The macramé tapestry of medical tubing considers socio-political issues surrounding women and the increasingly complicated healthcare system. Drawing from the women’s craft movement, the weaving in combination with the materiality of the installation imitates the difficulty of maneuvering and navigating the systemic roadblocks women face with medical needs. The celluloid pieces are informed by a lineage of structuralist filmmaking and linguistics and uses leader, material typically reserved for the peripheral purposes of threading, filler and protection. The banality of imageless frames emphasizes a materiality specific to the analogue process and proposes an exercise in shifting perspectives, as the traditionally two-dimensional medium suddenly becomes accessible from both sides.
The works simultaneously function as sculptures, shades and screens as they offer different viewing experiences from street level to within the gallery; and respond to the changing lighting conditions at Hairpin Arts Center. And together they embrace the physicality of materials and space to recontextualize marginalized conversations.

Kioto Aoki is a photographer and experimental filmmaker in Chicago. She is an analogue-image maker who explores different modes of perception and the implications of how we pay attention to the nuances of time, space, form, light and motion. Her recent work investigates the entity of motion between the still and the moving image. She received her MFA and BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. | www.kiotoaoki.com
Ellie Hazlett is a multimedia artist based in Chicago. She experiments with textures and materials to transform environments and perspectives. Most of her work examines and reflects sociopolitical issues regarding gender, privilege, and positionality.
