Artist Statement
My work is strongly informed by my interest in the motifs of domesticity, interpersonal relationships, and societal drama. The familial psychodrama is seen as a microcosm of the broader society and its’ institutions. My interest in an evolving sexuality, gender, class politics, the occult, and rebellion are hallmarks of my work. I use lurid color, pattern, and line to entice. Some images come to me like a vision, a flash in a daydream. Other images are arrived at through my writing and love of figurative language. The space and concept of childhood and home is thick with residue. I allow myself to return there in my mind to autopsy the space of the past, through the lens of the present, I extract the most compelling recollections. The resulting images are a hybrid of my past as well as my present experience and perspective. Simultaneously, I may incorporate historical references and symbols of a mythic American cultural life. Rather than nostalgic yearnings for the happiness of youth, there is a haunting distortion of what is remembered from that time. Truth, fiction, secrets, and lies mix together to arrive at a complex narrative that implicates the viewer. The lesson depicted in my allegorical work is the lasting psychological effect that our childhood and life event shave on our evolving identities. My art practice is my way of negotiating, interpreting, and processing events in my life; as well as events occurring in our changing and difficult world.
